The General Service Medal was awarded to the Army and Air Force for the numerous operations they were involved in from 1918 that did not constitute a war as such. By 1962, 16 bars were applicable to this medal. It was replaced in 1962 as was the Naval General Service Medal with the General Service Medal 1962, which covers all the armed forces. The Mention in Despatch is worn with the medal and is affixed to the centre of the ribbon at an angle of sixty degrees from the inside edge of the ribbon, Available as a separate item
Approximately 4,700 were issued to Australians.
