Instituted in 1854 in recognition of distinguished conduct by other ranks (OR) of the Army. The design has varied somewhat over time with the issuing of several forces own unique design, such as “West African Frontier Force”. In 1942 the Distinguished Conduct Medal was extended to the Navy and Air Force.
