This General Service Medal 1962 (GSM 62) was instituted in 1964 to supersede both the Naval General Service Medal 1915 and the General Service Medal 1918 (Army and RAF). As with the general service medals it replaced, it is issued with clasps which define the service for which the award is made.

The General Service Medal 1962 id cupro-nickle with the obverse having the effigy of the Queen. The reverse bears the words ‘FOR CAMPAIGN SERVICE’ under a crown, all surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves.

Members mentioned in despatches for operations recognised by the GSM 62 were approved to wear a bronze oak leaf MID on the medal ribbon.

Mentioned in Despatches available as a separate item

The General Service Medal 1962 ribbon is purple with two outer stripes of dark green.

Eight clasps have been issued to date. The clasps most commonly awarded to Australians are Borneo, Malay Peninsular and South Vietnam. The South Vietnam clasp was awarded exclusively to Australian troops.

Approximately 4,100 have been issued to Australians.

Please note bars are available as a separate purchase.

** Not all clasps are die struck – some are cast
