Commonly called the J Force medal, awarded to personnel despatched direct from New Zealand who had not had previous service in the Second World War, as well as about 5,000 troops stationed in Italy at the end of the war who were then sent to the Far East to take part in the police and peacekeeping operations in Japan between September 1945 and March 31, 1949, a minimum of 28 days service being required. To date it has been awarded un-named to about 4,700 veterans or their families. 15 military personnel were killed or died of sickness in Japan during the occupation. All reciepients are also entitled to the New Zealand Operational Service Medal (C58).

On the obverse New Zealand arms, reverse FOR SERVICE TO NEW ZEALAND 1946-1949 with a fern frond below.

The New Zealand Service Medal 1946-1949 ribbon is 32mm, white with a central red stripe and black stripes at the edges.

All loose ribbon available in 30cm lengths, as full size or miniature.
