Issued from 1915 to cover the numerous operations that the Navy were involved. By 1962 there were some 19 bars applicable to this medal. From 1962, like the General Service Medal of 1918 – 1962, the Naval General Service Medal was replaced by the General Service Medal 1962 , which covers all the branches of the armed forces.

Approximately 270 were issued to Australians.
